Softshell Jacket Shop

Softshell jackets are the perfect allround outdoor jackets for many days throughout the year. As the "soft" part of their name implies, softshell jackets are almost as comfortable as fleece jackets. However, the softshell material offers many additional benefits compared to fleece - which are enjoyable, no matter how hard-core you are.

Softshell Jackets

The greatest advantage of a softshell jacket is that it is more breathable than a rain jacket, while offering the same amount of wind protection. These properties of softshell jackets are achieved by using a membrane like the Gore-Tex Windstopper or other especially dense weaves.

Softshell Jackets for Women

The pliable softshell material can be easily taylored to produce a more feminine fit, ideal for active women. Women's softshell jackets with hoods and insulating lining are also great for winter touring in dry conditions. We recommend the Mammut Ultimate softshell jacket for women.

Softshell Jackets for Men

Softshell jackets are a great choice on cool and windy days, especially for intense outdoor activities like hiking, mountaineering, climbing, running, biking, or ski touring. Those who will mainly be using their men's softshell jacket for sports should look for softshell jackets with ventilation under the arms (so-called pit zips) when buying online. Note: Many softshell jackets feature sufficient waterproofing to be worn in a light rain.

Softshell Buyer's Guide

Softshell Buyer's Guide

Softshell - a wonder of functionality

In this day and age softshell jackets can be found in nearly every closet, and most people would not be willing to give up the benefits they provide. But what is it exactly that makes softshell membranes so popular?

The answer is simple: Softshell jackets and pants are quite literally soft (true to their name). Hard-shell clothing on the other hand is usually heavier and less flexible. Softshell jackets combine an outer and an insulating layer into one article of clothing, saving pack volume and weight. In addition, softshell products tend to be relatively inexpensive, adding greatly to their popularity. At first, softshell membranes for only used to make softshell jackets for women and men, but in the mean time there is also a large selection of softshell pants, hats, and even specialized softshell vests for men and women.

Applications and advantages of softshell

Of course one may ask whether a comparatively affordable softshell jacket can provide the same benefits as an expensive all-weather jacket. Here one must clearly define the purpose the jacket is supposed to be used for. Softshell clothing is ideal for hiking, backpacking and traveling. An expensive winter expedition jacket on the other hand will certainly never be a go-to article of clothing for hiking in temperate climates.

Arc'teryx softshell jacket

In short, softshell jackets are perfect for cool days, light rain, or long walks along foggy coastlines. They keep you warm and provide protection from wind and short rain showers - all the while remaining highly breathable. Their elsaticity is an additional benefit, allowing fir a closer fit while simultaneously offering a free range of movement.

TIP: Softshell care
Softshell outdoor clothing should we washed as little as possible, but as often as is necessary. This ensures that the clothing retains its functionality while remaining free of dirt (which can inhibit breathability).
  • Always follow the instructions on the tag when washing!
  • Close all zippers and velcro fasteners and turn the clothing inside out before washing.
  • Use mild liquid detergants and make sure to remove all soap residue with water.
(Do not use powdered detergants! They can clog the membrane's pores.)
  • Do not use fabric softener; it damages the membrane.
  • Dry clothing fully after washing.
  • Waterproofing coatings can be applied as soon as the fabric has dried completely.

The softness of softshell membranes not only makes them more comfortable to wear than other kinds of outdoor clothing, aber also causes less annoying russling sounds than hardshell materials. In addition, they are dirt-repellant and low-maintenance.

At higher elevations, or in cases where the weather might turn bad, it is a good idea to carry an additional waterproof shell under which the softshell clothing can be worn as an insulating layer.

Different softshell types

There are currently innumerable models of softshell clothing available on the market. Of course there are fundamental differences among them. To understand these differences, one must first understand how material is able to provide the benefits described above. Nearly all softshell designs are based on a basic principle: three layers. The outer layer is water repellant, abrasion resistant and durable, and transports moisture well from the inside to the outside without absorbing it. This layer is usually made of a dense synthetic fibre weave. These synthetic fibres are most commonly made of polyester, polypropylene or polyamide.

The second layer consists of a windproof and breathable membrane. However, softshell constructions that are purely woven and do not incorporate specialized membranes exist as well. In any case, the inside of softshell clothing usually features a fine and skin-friendly fleece fabric that is important for providing insulation and wicking away moisture from the skin.

Different softshell products emphasize different qualities so satisfy various demands for windproofing, waterproofing and breathability. Which product is best is a matter of personal preference and priorities.

Windproof softshell:
Windproofing is achieved by specialized membranes like the Gore Windstopper or Polartec Powershield. Special weaves like the Schoeller "dryskin" and "dynamic" can also make garments windproof. Top windproof softshell jackets include the Mammut Ultimate Softshell Hoody, the Arc'teryx Venta AR Softshell Jacket, and the Haglöfs Ridge Jacket.

Breathable softshell:
As general rule softshell jackets are more breathable, the less windproof they are. Jackets that are "only" wind resistant therefor offer more breathability. Softeshell products without a windproof membrane are best suited for those who want a highly breathable jacket for intense activities. An example: the Bergans Stamsund Jacket.

Waterproof softshell:
Softshell jackets are never going to be entirely waterproof. If you plan on spending hours on end out in a downpour, you are better off wearing a rain jacket. The company Gore does however offer great options for waterproof softshell jackets. The GORE-TEX® SOFT SHELLs are nearly fully waterproof, thanks to the integrated Gore-Tex membrane; the only place moisture can penetrate is at the seams. The jackets cannot be termed "waterproof" for this reason, but feature a soft fabric that does not rustle like other Gore products (e.g. the Pro-, Performance- and the new Gore-Tex Active Shell membrane). The company Schoeller has also has been making a chemical waterproofing agent for softshell products, called 3Xdry®, for several years.

When buying a waterproof softshell jacket one should also take a closer look at:

  • the type and thickness of taped seams
  • the quality of the integrated membrane, which usually comes at a price; good waterproof softshell jackets cost 200 - 300 Euros.
